The history of BTV12:
In order to utilize public rights of way for the installation of cable wiring, cable television operators must apply for and obtain a franchise from a city and/or county governing authority.

Pursuant to section 611 of the Cable Communications Policy Act of 1984, communities may require a cable operator to set aside at least one channel for public, education or government ("PEG") use as part of their negotiated franchise agreement.

Cable TV channel 12 was given to the City of Bonita Springs from Comcast as part of the franchise negotiation process. BTV12 limits use of channel capacity for educational and governmental (“EG”).

It is the City Council’s responsibility to develop, implement and enforce rules for EG Access Channel use.

What BTV12 is.
BTV12 stands for Bonita Springs Television Cable Access Channel 12. BTV12 is a cable TV channel that provides non-commercial government and educational programming up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to Comcast Cable subscribers in Bonita Springs as part of their basic cable service.

Hours of Operation
BTV12 provides programming twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week with live, recorded media, alpha-numeric and satellite programming. Hours of operation are enhanced through the use of automated playback equipment

BTV12 management.
The channel is operated by the City of Bonita Springs pursuant to its franchise.  Television Ordinance . The Bonita Springs City Council has oversight of program content, budget allocation and channel guidelines.

Facilities and staff are shared with the IT department. Production, scheduling  and content is provided through an appointed independent production consultant.

The City created a Telecommunications Advisory Board that in time will also advise on BTV12’s overall goals and objectives.
