Beautiful Bonita – City Wide Clean-up

Bonita Springs had its second annual city-wide Keep Bonita Beautiful clean-up.The event brought together volunteers from around the city to pick up debris and garbage for proper disposal instead of littering the streets. Volunteers were given coffee, donuts and a clean-up kit at Community Hall on Old 41. From there, they went to locations throughout Bonita, touching on some of the particularly bad areas. The event is the brainchild of Nelson, who started it by rallying people together to clean up his own District 6 in the city’s southeastern corner. Middle school students cleaning near Bonita Springs Elementary also found discarded underwear, but not as many pairs as another group of students found at last year’s Keep the Beautiful in Bonita cleanup. Volunteers then headed back to the Community Hall and the banyan tree area where Mayor Jay Arend cooked 170 hot dogs for all the volunteers. A BTV12 production.

Beautiful Bonita – Mayor’s Cup 2008

Thousands of people traveled to the Bonita Springs YMCA to watch four men's and four women's teams square off for the prize. The competition was not unlike other tournaments held by Casa Mexico, which co-sponsored the event with the city. The city, vendors, social service organization, the Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Bonita Springs Fire District all set up and interacted with the crowd. Their participation made the soccer tournament more of an event with music, giveaways and camaraderie. A BTV12 production.

Parents, teachers and City Hall officials joined students to mark Florida Arbor Day and a groundbreaking ceremony, which marked the first participant in the street tree program created by Bonita’s tree advisory board. The city will planted the trees but the property owners — in this case the students — are responsible for assuming the maintenance work. A BTV12 production.

A $1,000 purse was evenly distributed to the kayak race winners in four categories. Beautiful Bonita – Bicycle Safety Fair 2007

The June bicycling safety event was the first for the city, and may also be the first of many, likely including bike safety events for children at summer camps.
Florida laws require bikes to have a light on the front and a red reflector and light at the rear if they are on the roads between sunset and sunrise, but as with many of the regulations detailing how bikers and drivers should act, the laws sometimes get ignored. Free safety gear was made available at a bicycling event on June 3 at the city soccer fields at the corner of Kent Road and East Terry Street. Brochures detailing laws for bicyclists in both Spanish and English were also handed out.
